West Highland Way Stages Guide: Miles, Days and Prices for 2026

By Moira DonnellyJanuary 16, 20263 min read

96 miles is the full length of the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William, and most walkers split it into 6 to 8 stages. We plan this route every week at our Edinburgh studio, and the stage math decides whether you enjoy it or endure it. This guide gives you day splits, distances and 2026 costs.

96 Miles in 7 Stages Works for Most Walkers

96 miles divided into 7 days means 12 to 16 miles per day, which suits regular hill walkers with a 8 to 10 kg pack. Day 1 Milngavie to Drymen is 12 miles on low paths, Day 2 to Rowardennan is 15 miles along Loch Lomond. We see completion rates stay high when no single day passes 17 miles.

12 miles is the average for the first two days, so your legs warm up before the rougher middle. You walk on forest track, farm road and loch shore in this stretch. We set pickup points at Drymen and Rowardennan because both have reliable road access.

15 Miles Is the Loch Lomond Test

15 miles from Drymen to Rowardennan includes the uneven lochside boulders north of Inversnaid. Walkers take 7 to 9 hours for this stage with photo stops and a lunch break. We advise an early 08:00 start and poles for the rocky 4-mile loch section.

550 meters of cumulative ascent sits inside this one day, mostly in short pulls. You need ankle support here more than on any other southern stage. We route luggage around this section by road, so your bag waits at Rowardennan while you carry only a day pack.

3 Passes Decide the Middle of the Route

3 mountain passes shape days 3 to 5: Rowardennan to Inverarnan, then to Tyndrum, then to Kingshouse. Distances run 12 to 14 miles per day with 400 to 600 meters of climb. Rannoch Moor feels long because 7 miles pass with no buildings or shops.

2026 self-guided packages for 7 nights run 1,150 to 1,450 GBP per person based on two sharing, with en suite rooms and daily luggage moves. You get maps, a route card and a contact number for on-trail help. We add a rest option at Tyndrum because it splits the moor and the climb to Kingshouse.

19 Miles Covers Kingshouse to Fort William

19 miles is the usual final push when split as Kingshouse to Kinlochleven at 9 miles, then to Fort William at 10 miles. The Devil Staircase climbs 350 meters in about 2 miles, then drops 550 meters into Kinlochleven. You finish under Ben Nevis with 1,345 meters of bulk above you, though the Way itself stays in the glen.

  • 6-day version: 14 to 18 miles per day, for fit walkers only
  • 7-day version: 12 to 16 miles per day, our standard plan
  • 8-day version: 10 to 14 miles per day, with a rest day in Pitlochry style stop at Tyndrum or Kingshouse

9 miles is the shortest late stage, and it protects knees before the last day. You descend on a made path with steps near Kinlochleven. We book Kinlochleven overnights early because bed stock is smaller than in Fort William.

890 GBP Is the Floor for a Short Season Trip

890 GBP per person is the realistic floor for a 6-night May or October trip with luggage transfer and B and B rooms. Peak June to September runs 150 to 300 GBP higher for the same route. Single rooms add 280 to 420 GBP for the week across most guesthouses.

2 business days is our turnaround for a written stage draft after your planning call. Fiona MacLeod, our walking specialist, checks your daily miles against train times from Glasgow and Fort William. You get a kit list, a food-stop sheet and a wet-weather option for each exposed stage.
