Self-Drive North Coast 500 by Days: 5, 7 or 9 Days

By Fiona MacLeodAugust 9, 20263 min read

516 miles is the signed North Coast 500 loop from Inverness, and driving days decide whether you see it or just steer it. We plan 5, 7 and 9 day versions from our Edinburgh studio. Moira Donnelly checks each overnight for parking and single-track approach miles.

516 Miles Needs 7 Days for Most Drivers

Single-track road curving to a sea loch

516 miles over 7 days means 70 to 90 driving miles per day, or 2 to 3 hours at wheel. Day legs run Inverness to Ullapool to Scourie to Thurso to Wick to Grantown to Inverness. You get a 2-hour walk or castle stop daily without night driving.

90 miles is the longest single leg, usually Scourie to Thurso on fast A roads. The slowest is Applecross to Shieldaig at 35 miles in 2 hours via Bealach na Ba. We never place the Bealach after 16:00 for first-time single-track drivers.

103 Miles per Day Is the 5-Day Pace

103 miles per day is the 5-day average, which means 4 hours driving plus stops. Total trip time runs 9 to 10 hours per day with meals and photos. You skip 2 to 3 side loops and pre-book every dinner.

5 days suits drivers who have done single-track before and start by 09:00. Fuel runs 90 to 120 GBP for the loop in a petrol car at 2026 prices. We add a 60-minute buffer before any distillery or castle tour.

57 Miles per Day Is the 9-Day Pace

57 miles per day is the 9-day average, which opens rest afternoons in Ullapool and Durness. You add the Applecross loop, the Ardnamurchan-style detour north and a full Cairngorm day. Walking time rises to 3 to 4 hours per day.

  • 5 days: 100 miles per day, 1,100 to 1,400 GBP with car hire
  • 7 days: 74 miles per day, 1,300 to 1,700 GBP with car hire
  • 9 days: 57 miles per day, 1,600 to 2,100 GBP with car hire

1,300 to 1,700 GBP is the 7-day 2026 range for two people with midsize hire car, rooms and fuel. Rooms run 110 to 150 GBP per night. Car hire alone runs 350 to 550 GBP per week in summer.

18 Miles of Single Track Decides Each Day

18 miles is the longest continuous single-track stretch most days include, with passing places every 200 to 400 meters. You drive at 20 to 30 mph and pull in for faster locals. Sheep add 10 to 20 minutes per remote leg.

20 mph is the speed that keeps the trip calm and the wing mirrors intact. You learn the wave-and-pull routine on day one. We send a one-page single-track card with your road book.

3 Overnights Need the Earliest Booking

3 overnights fill first: Applecross area, Scourie to Durness, and the Tongue to Thurso gap. Each has 20 to 50 rooms total. Summer needs 12 weeks lead time for these 3, 6 weeks for the rest.

2 business days is our turnaround for a day-by-day drive draft with named stops. Moira Donnelly checks roadworks on the Bealach and the Durness causeway dates. You get a road book, a fuel-stop sheet and a walk option per day.
