Rob Roy Way Permits and Logistics: What You Actually Need

By Fiona MacLeodAugust 9, 20253 min read

79 miles is the length of the Rob Roy Way from Drymen to Pitlochry, and 90 percent of access questions come from this one route. No permit is needed to walk it under Scottish access rights. Fiona MacLeod in our studio handles the logistics that do matter: river levels, forest detours and luggage gaps.

0 Permits Are Needed for the Whole Route

Misty pine forest track with a trail arrow

0 permits are required for walking, wild camping in small numbers or using the waymarks. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code asks you to camp 100 meters from roads and buildings and to leave no trace. You need permission only for large groups over 12 or for vehicle access to forests.

79 miles crosses working farms and forestry blocks on 60 percent of its length. You keep dogs under control near lambing fields from April to June. We send a one-page access sheet with each booking so you know gate and fire rules.

79 Miles Splits Into 6 Practical Stages

79 miles over 6 days means 11 to 15 miles per day with 300 to 550 meters of climb. Day 1 Drymen to Aberfoyle is 11 miles, day 4 Callander to Strathyre is 12 miles. The hardest day is Amulree to Pitlochry at 15 miles with a 400-meter moor crossing.

6 nights with luggage transfer run 820 to 1,050 GBP per person in 2026. You get en suite rooms where available and one inn night with shared bath in the middle. We quote single supplements at 260 to 380 GBP for the route.

2 River Sections Need a Weather Check

2 river sections near Aberfoyle and Almondbank can flood after 20 mm of overnight rain. Normal stepping stones become knee-deep in those conditions. You check the morning river note we send by text before setting off.

  • Callander to Strathyre: road alternative adds 1 mile, avoids riverside path
  • Amulree moor: estate track alternative adds 2 miles in high wind
  • Pitlochry approach: riverside path floods first, road path stays dry

1 mile is the longest detour on the southern half, so bad weather costs you 20 to 30 minutes. You still reach your bed for dinner. We preload both options on your GPX file.

3 Luggage Gaps Need a Van, Not a Courier

3 stages have no regular taxi or courier coverage, so we run a dedicated van at 35 to 55 GBP per bag-move. Aberfoyle to Callander, Strathyre to Amulree and Amulree to Pitlochry are the gaps. Standard couriers skip these postcodes 4 days per week.

18 kg is the per-bag limit we set so drivers can load quickly at farm gates. You keep valuables and meds in your day pack. We tag each bag with the overnight name and a backup phone number.

14 Days Is the Cancellation Sweet Spot

14 days is the window where most guesthouses on this route still refund 50 percent. Inside 7 days the charge is usually 100 percent for small inns with 6 to 8 rooms. We state each house policy line by line in your booking sheet.

2 business days is our time to produce a logistics draft with named overnights and transfer points. Fiona MacLeod checks forest closure notices from two estate sources before sign-off. You get a detour card, a river-check routine and a support number for the full 6 days.
