12 trailheads cover 90 percent of waymarked walking on Skye, from Rubha Hunish to the Sleat peninsula. Parking bays hold 15 to 40 cars each, and 4 fill by 10:00 in July. Moira Donnelly, who plans our island trips, maps every start to a bus or transfer so you are not tied to one car.
12 Trailheads Handle Almost Every Day Walk

12 named starts include the Quiraing layby, Old Man of Storr car park, Fairy Pools, Talisker Bay and 8 coastal path gates. Distances from bed to trailhead run 3 to 18 miles by road. You cluster 2 to 3 walks per base to cut driving.
40 cars is the capacity at the Storr car park, with overflow closing the gate by 10:30 on sunny August days. We schedule that walk for 08:00 starts. You finish before the coach arrivals at midday.
4 Car Parks Need a Pre-Booked Arrival Plan
4 car parks now charge 5 to 8 GBP per day with card machines that fail in rain and low signal. The Quiraing, Storr, Fairy Pools and Neist Point sites take most pressure. Buses serve 3 of the 4 in summer on 2-hour frequencies.
- Quiraing: 4.5-mile loop, 350 meters ascent, 3 hours
- Storr: 3.5-mile return, 400 meters ascent, 2.5 hours
- Fairy Pools: 2.5-mile return, 150 meters ascent, 2 hours
- Talisker Bay: 3-mile return, 100 meters ascent, 2 hours
350 meters is the most ascent on any of these half-day options. You can pair two in one day with a 60-minute lunch drive. We sequence them by aspect so midges and sun stay manageable.

7 Miles Is the Longest Island Day Most Walkers Want
7 miles is our standard Skye day-walk length because bog, wind and photo stops double hill time versus the mainland. A 7-mile Trotternish ridge section takes 5 to 6 hours. You carry full waterproofs even when Portree shows sun.
20 GBP per person is the average 2026 transfer cost for trailhead hops from Portree or Kyleakin. We batch pickups at 08:30 and 09:15 to keep costs down. You get a pickup card with driver name and layby code.
3 Bases Cover the Island Without Daily Packing
3 bases work best: Portree for 3 nights, Broadford for 2 nights, Kyleakin or Sleat for 2 nights. Driving legs between bases run 25 to 45 miles and take 60 to 90 minutes. You move bags twice in a week instead of daily.
680 to 900 GBP per person is the 2026 range for a 6-night Skye walking week with transfers and en suite rooms. Ferries and the bridge add 0 to 30 GBP depending on route. We cost both arrival options in your draft.
48 Hours Is the Weather Window We Trust
48 hours is the reliable forecast horizon for Skye ridge and coast decisions. Beyond that we hold two route cards: exposed and sheltered. Winds over 40 mph close the high Trotternish options and we switch you to woods and shore.
2 business days is our time to send a trailhead plan with parking, bus and pickup notes. Moira Donnelly checks ferry and roadworks notices for your week before sign-off. You get GPX starts, toilet points and a midges-and-water sheet.
