84 miles is the length of Hadrians Wall Path from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, and the middle 30 miles hold almost all the climbing. We plan it west to east so the wind sits behind you on the crags. Callum Reid in our studio sets section lengths around fort opening times.
84 Miles Breaks Into 6 Walking Sections

84 miles over 6 days means 12 to 16 miles per day, with day 1 the flattest at 14 miles on the Solway. Days 3 and 4 carry 350 to 450 meters of ascent each on the Whin Sill crags. You feel those two days in your calves more than the mileage suggests.
16 miles is the longest day, usually Chollerford to Newcastle, on mostly flat riverside path. You cover it in 6 to 7 hours with a fort stop. We place this late in the week when your legs are conditioned.
30 Miles of Crags Hold 80 Percent of the Climbing
30 miles between Birdoswald and Chollerford contain the dips and rises over Highshield, Steel Rigg and Housesteads. Each dip drops 80 to 120 meters then climbs back the same. You count 5 to 7 distinct pulls on the longest crag day.
550 meters is the total ascent on the hardest single day in that stretch. Poles cut knee load on the short stone descents. We cap that day at 13 miles so you reach your inn by 16:00.
5 Forts Are Worth Timed Entry in 2026
5 forts repay a timed ticket: Birdoswald, Housesteads, Chesters, Corbridge and Segedunum. Entry runs 9 to 14 GBP per site, with a 2026 multi-site pass at 32 GBP. Opening hours run 10:00 to 17:00 in season, shorter from November.
| Day | Section | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bowness to Carlisle | 14 |
| 2 | Carlisle to Birdoswald | 13 |
| 3 | Birdoswald to Once Brewed | 12 |
| 4 | Once Brewed to Chollerford | 13 |
| 5 | Chollerford to Newcastle | 16 |
| 6 | Newcastle to Wallsend | 16 |
12 miles is the average crag day in the table, not the headline 16. You spend more time per mile there because of photos and fort stops. We build 60 to 90 minutes of fort time into days 3 and 4.
890 to 1,120 GBP Covers 6 Nights in 2026
890 to 1,120 GBP per person is the 2026 range for 6 nights with luggage moves and en suite rooms. Solo supplements run 280 to 400 GBP across the small inns. Luggage moves cost 10 to 14 GBP per bag per stage.
2 pubs per overnight is our minimum check for dinner choice in villages under 500 people. You get a dinner sheet showing walk-in versus book-ahead places. We book the first night dinner where trains arrive after 19:00.
2 Hours Links Newcastle to Either End
2 hours is the typical rail plus bus time from Newcastle to Carlisle or Bowness for your return. Trains run hourly on the core line, then a local bus covers the last 8 to 12 miles. Taxis for the Solway gap cost 40 to 60 GBP in 2026.
2 business days is our turnaround for a section plan with fort times and transfer points. Callum Reid aligns your walking days with museum closing days. You get a GPX track, a fort ticket note and a wet-weather crag alternative.
