Dales Way Accommodation Trick: Book the Middle First

By Fiona MacLeodSeptember 17, 20262 min read

78 miles runs from Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windermere, and 3 middle villages decide whether your trip works. Kettlewell, Dent and Burneside hold fewer than 60 guest beds combined. Moira Donnelly in our studio books those 3 first, then fills the ends around them.

78 Miles Needs 6 Nights and 5 Walking Days

Boots and jackets in a stone drying room

78 miles over 5 walking days means 14 to 17 miles per day, with day 4 the longest moor stretch. Day 1 Ilkley to Burnsall is 14 miles on riverside path. Day 3 Kettlewell to Dent runs 16 miles over Cam Fell at 520 meters.

520 meters is the highest point of the route, and the 4-mile moor crossing has no shelter. You check wind before leaving Dent. We set a road-bailout taxi number on that route card.

3 Villages Hold Fewer Than 60 Beds Combined

3 villages form the bottleneck: Kettlewell with about 25 beds, Dent with about 20, and the Burneside approach with 12. Groups of 4 to 6 can block a whole house. You lose date flexibility if you leave these to last.

10 weeks is the lead time we advise for May and June Dales Way beds in these villages. September needs 6 weeks. We hold provisional rooms for 48 hours while you confirm trains.

2 Nights Decide the Price of the Whole Trip

2 nights in Kettlewell and Dent set 30 percent of your trip cost because small inns price at 110 to 140 GBP per room. The full 6-night trip runs 850 to 1,080 GBP per person in 2026 with luggage moves. Singles pay 280 to 390 GBP extra across the week.

  • Book first: Kettlewell, Dent, Burneside area
  • Book second: Ilkley, Grassington, Sedbergh area
  • Book last: Bowness, where 200 plus rooms absorb demand

140 GBP is the top room rate we accept before offering you the next village out. You add a 1-mile path extension rather than a 60 GBP premium. We show both options in the draft.

14 Miles Is the Average Riverside Day

14 miles is typical for the Wharfe and Dee riverside stages, on flat grass and gravel. Feet stay drier than on the moor day. You change socks at lunch and keep pace at 2.5 mph.

8 GBP to 12 GBP per bag per stage is the 2026 transfer rate on this route. One carrier covers the full 78 miles daily. We label bags by house, because Dent has 3 houses with similar names.

48 Hours Is Our Hold Window on Key Houses

48 hours is the courtesy hold most Dales inns give us while you check leave dates. After that rooms release to the open market. July weekends release fastest, often within 24 hours.

2 business days is our turnaround for a bed-first plan with named houses. Moira Donnelly confirms each bottleneck room by phone before we send your draft. You get a booking sheet, a moor-weather card and a dinner-booking list.
